The debian packages are compiled without NNTP support.

ii  evolution-ssl     0.99.0-2          The groupware suite (SSL support)

aka RC 1.0; It has the conduits, as does the evolution without ssl package
(although the EAddress one is currently not working, but I haven't had the
time to work out why).

There's a "Pilot Settings" menu in the Tools menu that bounces you off to
the Control Centre page for the conduits. You can also just go there in the
control centre itself.

God I wish they'd lay off that yellow monkey button for user interface
elements. Yeeeeesh!
