Hi All!

Just when things are going okay...

My system locked up and I was forced to reach for the power button (while
using Evolution and downloading tonnes of mail).

The other thing I had done which I suspect is the real problem is change
some permissions on root:root files/directories (removing world
permissions).

After rebooting, I go the following error messages:

Starting GNOME Display Manager: gdm_config_parse: Authdir /var/lib/gdm does
not exist. Aborting.
        gdm

Starting printer spooler: (date) <host> Read_file_list: Cannot stat
required file '//etc/printcap' - Permission Denied.
        lprng

Now these files/directories do exist.

So I tried reinstalling gdm - no luck (desperate chice).

I then discovered that when I try and login as my normal user I get the
message:
        cannot cd to "/home/user"

I then found that as root whenever I try to su to a user I get the error:
        #su <user>
        No shell.

So I suspect that the gdm and lprng errors are just because those users
cannot "login".

I also get the following error:
        #man su
        execv: Permission denied

I have checked and bash is there and the directories in /home all have the
correct permissions.

Now, I can't remember exactly what file permissions I changed but they were
on some root:root files. I changed the files in /boot which I changed back
but to no avail.

Could someone point me in the right direction as to what is required when
someone logs in? What permissions could I have stuffed or may be corrupted
from the forced power down?

TIA,

wandering user...
