If U want to use 40G HDD with old bios, you can get a Diskmanager 2000
driver. This loads into the boot area, and translates the drive. I am not
sure what capacity the O/S sees from the drive as I havent loaded it yet, but
it is available (IBM have it for download for their drives) The problem is
that the 40G, (or any drive over 32G) confuses the bios, which then refuses
to detect the drive. The driver 'fools' the bios into seeing a smaller drive,
then operates a translation programme. IBM also supply Linux drivers. (I
personnally like the IBM Hdds as they are fast & reliable, if a little more
expensive, & much better than some cheap hand grenades!)
The problem only seems to affect LX & BX mbds to my knowledge. I have used a
40G IBM in an old PPro m/c, which saw as 8G, but Linux ran fine on full 40.
Hope this helps those that cant upgrade BIOSes for some reason.
