Well - I think that I prefer Gigabyte with AMD - in my experience (admitidly
mostly with Microsoft based networks) they are more stable. I freely admit
that I have only been using linux solidly for the past couple of months - and
I am using a simple distribution, Mandrake 8.1 in my AMD K6-500 based
system), but I have noticed something, there seems little point in buying the
fastest processor around at the expense of overkilling RAM.

Is this something that the list would agree with?

I think that if one has a choice between a cutting edge Intel Chip and RAM -
one should take the extra RAM. If one is using AMD and has the choice
between a ASUS/ABIT motherboard or more RAM, one should take the more RAM.

It seems to me also that AMD chips outperform equivilant Intel chips, and are
cheaper, even without overclocking, especially when you have more RAM then
God, or throw your savings from not buying intel into more RAM.

Is this a bang-for-bucks rule of thumb which holds true or is there something
under linux that I am still to run into?

Regards,
James.
