well, i don't know about that. i custom-roll my desktop, running
sawfish, etc with no panel. everything's done with shortcut keys. the
other day i tried "startx", and it loads up the entire KDE system.
it's very pretty :) i was suprised how "usable" it felt in comparison
to something like windows.

i agree with what you're saying though. open standards are more
important than what operating system each computer is running.
