I must admit to needing the gurus in the group to tell me that I really 
should upgrade my kernel 2.4.9 to version X for these reasons 
occasionally.   I am basically happy staying on the trailing edge and 
letting the others bleed but at the same time I do not want to be stuck 
in the dark ages.
