He should specify the IP in the chap-secrets file or in the modems tty file
ie /etc/ppp/options.ttyS0

I think the authentiction is that he doesn't have the chap-major-80 setup
correctly.. so it can't authenticate properly I don't think..

are you using chap auth?
i suggest you do at least. in which can the format is outlined in the man
pages, however you need to assign an IP address in chap-secrets
try replacing that last * in chap-secrets with a valid IP on your network
