I don't know about the HP printer, ;) stick with Xerox 

The cups documentation says to use in your command
lpr -P HP4100 -o sides=two-sided-long-edge or
lp -d HP4100 -o sides=two-sided-long-edge

If this doesn't work the HP must use other options to print duplex.
