Ah-ha! It was the -p0 that was missing. Now applied and the pre-emptible kernel is excellent! The system is vastly more responsive and, here's the important bit, the PPP link doesn't slow down any more when I rip CDs. But the nice side effect is far more quick screen refreshes when I switch virtual screens in X.
