  export PATCH_THE_KERNEL=yes
  fakeroot make-kpkg --config=xconfig --revision=pants.1.0 kernel-image

You have to do the config step, so you can save any changes made / choose
extra bits added during the patching stage.

I was totally unconvinced of this whole wanky patch-packaging thing until I
used the Debian freeswan kernel patches. Holy crap! That's so eeeaaassy!
