Ken, I have a feeling you're using the wrong SMTP server.  Try
using mail-optushome.optusnet.com.au.  Do not use SMTP
authentication.  I just sent out a mail from there successfully.

Optus@Home changed many settings a month or two ago (when your IP
address changed), including DNS servers and your domain name.  I
used to be in the belrs1.nsw.optushome.com.au domain; now i'm in
belrs2.nsw.optusnet.com.au.  nslookup your IP address and make
sure that your /etc/resolv.conf has the right domain set.  (It
should be if you're using DHCP, but check anyway.)
