When I boot with kernel 2.4.16 I get a couple of strange (to me)
things.
1. If I ask for a df I get an entry in the table for /dev/shm
which has about 64Mb all unused.
This entry is not present when I boot back to 2.4.0.
Any one know what /dev/shm is and why it appears?

2. When using 2.4.16 I can dial the net but pppd dies with an
exit code 1. The log tells me that it "permissions for
/dev/ttyS0 are ok" [my modem is on ttyS0] "can't locate module
tty-ldisc-3" and that it "couldn't set tty to ppp dicipline".
In modules.conf tty-ldisc-3 is aliased to ppp.

This problem disappears when I boot into 2.4.0.
My pppd is version 2.4.0 and my machine is an old K6/2 -500 with
128Mb RAM running SuSE 7.1

Any clues or pointers would be welcomed.

Stay well and happy
