I do believe you have the very wrong end of the stick. PHP, JSP, et al, are
*server-side* extensions, and do not require any particular support from the
browser (because by the time the client sees it it's all HTML). The
technologies which were being maligned - JavaScript, Applets, and all the
rest (SWF, BG Sound, et al), are rightfully maligned, because most people
using them produce utter crap. If a Web-site does not work correctly
without them, then obviously the person/people creating that site have no
real idea what it is like to view a web page on an older computer, or
without aid of sight, or so on.
All these new technologies have their place, but their use often signifies
either laziness, lack of creativity, lack of knowledge, or an over-riding
love of eye-candy to the detriment of general functionality. Used
correctly, in the right context, they're good and they have their place, but
when you see this in a purportedly HTML document:
<script>
window.writeln("<h1>My Header</h1>");
</script>
You just *know* that someone wasn't giving someone else a proper hit at the
crack pipe.
