I have the same problem and haven't been able to resolve it. I want to use the pound symbol (living in the UK) but have my system set up for US keyboard (why oh why did the Brits move the entire keyboard around to accomodate one extra character?).
I suspect I'll need to configure a bunch of things, but don't know how to do it. xterm, mutt and probably my ssh client from work (putty). Any pointers?
