Just to let you know the workaround for my system panics when reading a
cdrom; an hdparm -d1 -X34 /dev/hdc did the trick.

Luke,
Try turning off (or reducing the speed of) DMA on
the cdrom device(s) with either one of these commands:

    hdparm -d0 -c1 /dev/hdd 
    hdparm -d 1 -X 34 /dev/hdd

This assumes that your cdrom is connected to /dev/hdd 
(change accordingly).
