USB 1.0/1.1 is 12Mbps, which is 1.5MB/sec, or "10x" for a cd-writer. So realistically you should be able to run it up to about 6x without any problems (presuming nothing else big on the same bus) Not ideal, but given that it's for a laptop thats still fairly reasonable.
