hallo hallo,

Somebody (can't remember who) was asking about a USB CD-RW unit
last week. Well, good news for you:

    1. I had the idiocy to buy one and test it out with Linux,
with no research done beforehand to see whether it
       actually worked with Linux

    2. It actually worked with Linux

The unit I purchased was an Acer CRW 8824MM, for $450[1]. It
works fine through both USB and PCMCIA support.

If connected via USB, the usb-storage driver detects the drive as
SCSI, and you're set. It couldn't be easier.

If you're using PCMCIA, a bit of ide-scsi voodoo is needed, but
it's really not hard at all. (Change one line in
/etc/modules.conf -- you just need to know what to change).

cdrecord is burning an ISO CD at 8x over PCMCIA at the moment,
with BURNproof support, and the FIFO has never dropped below
100%. It's a pretty cool little unit :).

Anyway, if anybody's interested in more details, email me about
it. (Note: cdrdao not tested yet.)
