I just looked into this as a couple of months ago I was looking around for a laserjet. The HP web site has drivers for lots of their printers. The drivers are binary only. Go to their web site and have a look around. Also the Linux Printing HOWTO hasa "report card" on each printer manufacturer and how well teir printers are supported. I ended up getting a Lexmark (again bin only driver) 1200dpi B/W laserjet.
