Two points on that - most importantly, GNOME is a UNIX desktop, not a Linux
desktop. Sun is working extraordinarily hard to make it kick arse on
Solaris. Also, there's a lot more Mac in there than Windows (despite some
toolkit issues and defaults chosen by various distributors).

Yeah, but again you've given us the 'whats' and not the 'whys'. More detail
is required so that we (I'm involved in GNOME, there are other SLUGgers
involved in KDE) can fix it for you.
