keeping the same uid/gid across all machines is fine (I do that
anyway - it's only a few users and few machines) but that doesn't
solve the problem for me.  What you're saying xfire is samba
won't do it I need to use nfs instead.  Unfortunately I don't
really want to so will probably just put up with it if samba
can't do it, at least I write files as a normal user now anyway.
