1) no idea 2) you have multiple (or virtual more correctly) terminals just try holding alt-f1, alt-f2 etc to swap between them. as for multiple desktops on the command line check out the application screen (apt-get install screen). it really rocks and is like a window manager for your terminal. great over ssh.
