G'Day Gang,

Sorry to be such a pain but I don't want this thing to beat me.

The "There is no mode definition named "800x600" " problem was solved with the line
"Mode "800x600" " in the Monitor section of XF86Config
Now when I boot the system everything seems to go ok. I log in as root at the comand
prompt (no graphics) and do a "startx" and I get a message saying that the server is
already running on display 0. At this point the command prompt has disappeared and
although I can enter text at the bottom of the screen the only way I am able to get
out of
it is by Ctr+Alt+Del.

I did a interactive startup and said no to start wine and this seemed not to start the
server
and when I did a startx I got the following info before it just sat there without the
command prompt as before.

Quote:

Configured Drivers: S3: accelerated server for S3 Graphics adaptors (Patch level 0)
newmmio, mmio_928, s3-generic
(using VT number 7)

XF86Config : /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config

End Quote

And that is as far as it goes. I have to Ctr+Alt+Del to get out of it.

Can anyone see any glaring problems there??

TIA

Kind Regards

Dennis
