VT number 7 means it has started an X session on virtual terminal number 7. What happens/shows if you hit simultaneously Ctrl-Alt-F7 ? That should take you to the graphical x display on VT 7 > Could this be a memory problem? I only have 32Meg of Ram. 32Meg will be fine.
