Dave,

I've done a 'find . -name syslog -print' search and could not find a
file by that name.

Looking at Mutt, I get the following error messages:

Error message 1.

"No .news.daily file: Need to run news.daily. ?"

Error message 2.

Subject: innwatch warning: messages in /var/log/news/news.crit

I should point out that 'tux' is the internal name of the system.

*******>>>>> Does anyone know what 'signal 15' refers to ?
<<<<<*******

As /etc/ppp/options suggests,

egrep -v '#|^ *$' /etc/ppp/options

gives the following readout:

------------------------------
Currently active options:

asyncmap
auth
crtscts
lock
hide-password
modem
proxyarp
lcp-echo-interval 20
Lcp-echo-failure 4
noipx
----------------------

When I try 'pon primus' the SupraExpress 56e PRO modem dials up normally
but while the RD lights flashes (receiving a signal from the primus
server), but the SD light is inactive suggesting that it is not
responding. I timed the interval between end of dial-up and
disconnection as 40 seconds using my SEIKO analog automatic.

I enabled the 'debug' option in /etc/ppp/options but running it again
did not give me any error information. I did not find /etc/syslog.conf
to be very clear on how to set up an error file.

I've had no previous trouble with authentification, certainly none with
the XP drive, and the lcp echo timeout settings are the standard
defaults. Where do I get to read up on lcp echo timeout/interval options
?

Any constructive leads will be appreciated: previous installs have never
had this problem.

any errors in syslog about it?
if not, enable pppd debugging ('debug' option in /etc/ppp/options
I think) and do it again and see what errors you get.

if it's only after 1 min, sounds like you're not authenticating
properly or the lcp echo timeout things are disconnecting it.
Read up on lcp echo timeout/interval options to pppd if that's
the case.

Dave.
