Uuugh, thats a bit of an ugly kludge.  Since it's USB, why not
investigate setting up 'hotplug'.  I guess it's the hotplug package
under Red Hat, I don't really know.  Once you've got that installed, and
the kernel is set to allow hotplugging ( Under "General setup" ->
"Support for hotplug devices" ).
Then assuming you have reasonably recognizable brand of printer, plug it
in and it *should just work*.
