(if anyone has mandrake rpm's for this I'd be thrilled to know where to 
get them. This is precisely the sort of cpu cycle wasting technology 
that my computer needs)

The nvidia geforce cards also do drop shadows on the mouse pointer if 
you set the right options in XF86Config-4

As I understand it, transparency is quite tricky using just X. Video 
cards can probably do alpha blending quite nicely (although, the last 
time I saw someone do alpha-blending they went to the trouble of doing 
MMX assembly code because they decided that it was too slow otherwise.)
