Which keyboard type did you select, and did you see a setting for 'dead
keys' switched on during the install? Dead keys assist with typing special
characters, and it sounds like you have them enabled.
You may be able to turn these off in... DrakConf? The Mandrake configuration
thingy. :-)

I found the HOWTOs on linuxdoc.org pretty good when I was starting off. I
don't think I'm very receptive to guide style books though.
Perhaps we can put some book recommendations up on the website?
