I started with one book and learnt quickly
    Linux in a nutshell; O'Reilly
I now have
    Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible
I find these "bible books" and "complete reference books" quite verbose
    This Mailing List

If you live close to five dock call into
    Everything Linux www.everythinglinux.com.au/
there is a pretty good selection of all books, pretty reasonable
     Hotline Books Chatswood www.hotlinebooks.com.au
a bit expensive offers 10% discount to students with ID cards no
questions.
Borders Books Maq Centre North Ryde
excellent selection, plenty of freedom to read to find the right
book to suit you and offers student discount on GST rebate 'not really a
discount'.

The main thing you should consider is the linux Distribution you are using
since they behave slightly different to each other.
