Hi Ian, A bit of a sledgehammer approach here...
During my learning curve of Linux (still learning btw) what i've done is get a test box that I can trash and rebuild to my hearts content. Then I grab the distro that i want to play with and load *everything* and go away and do something else while it's happening. then pretty much all the dependencies that everything needs is on the machine. I can remove stuff and check programs and see what get wrecked what etc. also load extra stuff and all the libs are there already etc. If you are using mandrake there is a KDE tool called RPMDrake or something. Under GNOME you can access the KDE menus and use the RPM installer. What is good about it is that it installs the dependencies as well. It works on Mandrake 8.2, 8.1 but can't remember about the version 7 series. Maybe you startup KDE to access it if GNOME does not work. type "startkde" at the prompt, I think this worked on the V7 series.
