Yuck. Although it's tempting to put it in the FAQ. The amount of bile expressed in that thread, and the reaction of the LinuxChix group as relayed by Mary to the committee was deeply embarrassing. I think it would be highly inappropriate for SLUG - as a community represented by the committee - to let this go as "just something that happens on mailing lists". It's not, and should not be. > By all means send a letter if that's what you want, it all just seems a > bit silly and over the top to me. You were not on the receiving end of the "joke". Others - myself included - found it reprehensible, and entirely worthy of this response. I'm upset that it happened at all. > (is this what happens a loosely > connected group like slug become all "official"?) What, we can't display some common decency without being overly "official"? :-) True enough, the new committee seems to be taking things pretty seriously compared to the previous two casual (though not un-serious) years. I've been making a few jokes here and there about the "newbloods" saying things like "seconded" and "moved" in the committee meetings. I'd like to keep it as casual as it has been in the past, but we do have a responsibility to be a bit more organised in some areas. Given that SLUG is a legal entity, and that the committee have their arses on the line for that kind of stuff, it's not surprising that we're being a bit more "official". You're absolutely welcome to share your thoughts on where SLUG is going, and how we're doing things with the committee. We are always keen to hear what SLUGgers (and those who've not yet joined) think about it all.
