TeX (in particular LaTeX or ConTeXt) can provide a layout and typography sophistication only rivalled by some of the $big commercial products. Its a pity no-one (that i'm aware of) has slapped together a gui-ish program for just putting chained boxes of TeX and a few possibly-overlapping boxes of images onto a page in some fairly intuitive fashion. (i don't think it would actually be that hard to do..
