TeX (in particular LaTeX or ConTeXt) can provide a layout and
typography sophistication only rivalled by some of the $big commercial
products. Its a pity no-one (that i'm aware of) has slapped together a
gui-ish program for just putting chained boxes of TeX and a few
possibly-overlapping boxes of images onto a page in some fairly
intuitive fashion.

(i don't think it would actually be that hard to do.. You'd still have
to know TeX to fill the boxes, but it would get you 80% of the way
there with only a week or so of hacking..)
