i've heard the USR modems can be a little tricky...althogh having never owned one i cant back this up, but i would have thought as long as it is used just like any generic modem it should be fine.
Firstly make sure your serial ports are enabled in bios, or if you have a serial IO card with jumpers, make sure the port is enabled on the card. assuming you have standard serial ports there shouldn't be much problem but if you have non-standard ports then your kernel may not be able to handle this..you may need to recompile your kernel to support non-standard serial ports. if your still having trouble, maybe consider using Linuxconf...i comes with RedHat, but you may need to install the RPM from the redhat cd-rom. this comes with a modem detect feature so it might make your life a little easier. hope that helps -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jason Hewett Sent: Wednesday, 15 May 2002 8:40 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [SLUG] Connecting external Modem Hi everyone, I have a machine running RedHat 7.2 and have connected an external modem to it through the spare serial port. The machine is an old Pentium 133. Kudzu didn't detect the device and when I do a statserial on either serial port I only get /dev/ttyS1 come back with any details and the /dev/ttyS0 isn't detected. Can anyone advise what the best procedure is to make connection to the modem and establish communication. The external modem I connected was a US Robotics 56k voice/fax. Thanks in advance.
