That's not true, actually.  You just have to run it when X isn't
running on another display.  But it only produces a very minimal file. 
I want to set things up for 1600x1280 mode, at the best frequency I can
get ...

I wonder what Red Hat use during system installation?  That works quite
well, whatever it is.
