I've just spent some time mucking about with the IDE cables thinking the
drive wasn't readable in UDMA mode (I'd switched to UDMA cables) but
without positive result. It's looking more like the disk is dead.

I tried booting with my emergency linuxcare bootdisk and I get I/O errors
when it tries to look at the partition of the disk:

This is just from memory:
hda: hda1, hda4, hda6
hdb:
and then:
hdb: read_intr: status=-x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error},
LBAsect=0, sector=0
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:40 (hdb), sector 0
EXT2-fs: couldn' read superblock on 2nd try.
