Thanks for all the great suggestions, especially like ntsysv I found its a Mandrake distro thing, which has its own quirks. Mdk has a different directory system to what the ipchains compile and as a result it doesn't get started. I found this by installing iptables-ipv6-1.2.6a-1mdk.i586.rpm, and whala! it worked! an inspiration after re-reading Oskar Andreasson's treatise :-) Hhhmph to non-standards in distros, hopefully that is fixed in more recent Mdk distro. regards Russell
