Okay, I've snipped your other two points, as this has nothing to do with
your internet connection. GNOME is just making a guess as to what your
hostname should be. You'll need to make sure your /etc/hosts file looks
something like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 pants.example.com pants
(The second line is your local ip address, hostname + local domain name and
hostname. You can put those on the top line if you don't have a local
network address.)
