AFAIK the default file open for MS Word is for "open for writing, exclusive,
locked" even though the user is only reading it.
You should see a file being created which is the temporary scratch area for
that Word session.
Word uses a lot of local memory and also regularly polls/writes to the
server for things, especially if the user has their word options set for
automatic file save.

The temporary files are deleted about 30 seconds or so after the word
session is finished and then the locks are removed.

As for slowness over a tape backup, yes, that's why many people don't backup
that way.
One way to get around it is to use Veritas Netbackup and stick the client
software on the machine.
It bypasses the slow SMB/CIFS protocol.

Regards,

Jill.
