Probably your access rights to that LDAP directory. You have to have WRITE access rights otherwise you will only be able to view. It's a setting in ldap.conf or slapd.conf from memory.
If you are looking for a great GUI LDAP browser, try http://www.iit.edu/~gawojar/ldap/. Of course, you'll need to visit java.sun.com if you don't have java 4 linux yet.
