AUUG2002 CONFERENCE, MELBOURNE SEPTEMBER 1-3
--------------------------------------------

Rob Pike on "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: The Unix Legacy" and
"An Introduction to Quantum Computation and Communication" ?!?

This year's AUUG conference concentrates on networking, security and
software development, with Rob Pike (http://www.cs.bell-labs.com/who/rob/ :),
Greg Lehey (FreeBSD core team, and AUUG President), Mark White, John Terpstra,
Rusty Russell (yes, on futexes), Anton Blanchard, John Ferlito, people from
Apple harping on about how good Unix is (with hands-on Xserve tutes) and
speakers from Free Speech Victoria, Electronic Frontiers Australia and auDA.

The following message from the programme chair:

Believe it or not, we're just a month and a half out from the AUUG2002
conference. We have a great programme of tutorials, papers and invited
speakers lined up for you in Melbourne and we'd love to see you there.

The registration form and full details of the conference are available at:

        http://www.auug.org.au/winter/auug2002/

Registrations received after 7th August 2002 incur a $100 late fee.
While this may seem a long way off, dates like this do have a habit of
creeping up on you, so we advise early registration.

I look forward to seeing you in September!

  Adrian Close
  Programme Chair, AUUG2002.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN SOURCE AWARDS
-----------------------------

AUUG is proud to announce the inaugural Australian Open Source Awards.
These annual awards are intended to encourage and recognise the excellence
and dedication of Australians contributing to the open source arena.

Awards will be given in four categories: technology, application, community,
and special achievement, with nominations and voting open to all AUUG members.

Each award will be given for a specific and complete work. Furthermore,
in the case of the Technology and Application awards, the work in question
must be publically available on the Internet and in general use.

The Awards Ceremony will be take place during the AUUG 2002 Annual Conference
Dinner, on September 5, 2002, in Melbourne.

AUUG would like to especially acknowledge the contribution of Patryk
Zadarnowski for originating the idea of the awards, and the generous
sponsorship of Silicon Breeze/Linux Jewellery (www.siliconbreeze.com) for
