well, whatever is doing the NAT counts as a firewall rule for large values
of 'firewall rule'...  ;)

what he means is that a machine can be setup to NAT for the network behind
it but not pass out any traffic for the localhost.

so it would be helpful to know:

- what major version of the kernel are you using?
- ipchains or iptables?
- what NAT rules are you using?
