Actually, the power network in Sydney is a nightmare.  High powered audio
tomes are injected into the 240 volt mains to control people's hot water
systems, especially at night.  If you have any leakage of signal from your
power cables to your phone line (such as cables running close and parallel
for several rooms in the ceiling in a terrace), then you will experience
modem dropouts all the time.  Write down the times of each disconnection and
you will be amazed.  You heard it here first.  The major cause of dropouts
after call waiting.
