I've made a little progress.
Perhaps the definition of \pcaption is wrong as I want it to work like
\caption.
i.e. the form \caption[1]{2}
\pcaption works if it is like \pcaption{2},
but if it is like \pcaption{1]{2}, then it just grabs the left hand
square bracket [.
I've looked at float.sty, but can not make headway of the definition of
caption.
