> What about /var/log/syslog and /var/log/auth.log ?
syslog is same as /var/log/messages
---------syslog---------------------------------------
Aug 13 22:53:26 ccps-dialin pppd[1350]: pppd 2.4.1 started by a_ppp, uid 0
Aug 13 22:54:03 ccps-dialin pppd[1350]: Terminating on signal 15.
Aug 13 22:54:03 ccps-dialin pppd[1350]: Exit.
------------------------------------------------------
and auth.log has two scenarios,
Sometimes and Once every 10th or so dial, the Windows95 box, just says the
remote computer was not responding...
(it appears that the linux (or mgetty) doesn't detect the ppp/pap request and
attempts
to default to login , instead of trying the /AutoPPP/ route
in these cases I see
------------auth.log----------------------------------
Aug 13 22:51:29 ccps-dialin mgetty[1346]: data dev=ttyS0, pid=1346,
caller='none', conn='19200', name='', cmd='/bin/login', user='ATZ'
Aug 13 22:51:30 ccps-dialin PAM_unix[1346]: check pass; user unknown
Aug 13 22:51:30 ccps-dialin PAM_unix[1346]: authentication failure;
LOGIN(uid=0) -> **unknown** for login service
Aug 13 22:51:34 ccps-dialin login[1346]: FAILED LOGIN (1) on `ttyS0' FOR
`UNKNOWN', Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.
------------------------------------------------------
and the other case is the normal (or more occuring), Win95 complaing not
protocol could not be established.
In this case it's clear that mgetty is handing over to pppd (via /AutoPPP/)
------------auth.log----------------------------------
Aug 13 22:53:25 ccps-dialin mgetty[1350]: data dev=ttyS0, pid=1350,
caller='none', conn='19200', name='', cmd='/usr/sbin/pppd', user='/AutoPPP/'
------------------------------------------------------
> Also whats in /etc/ppp/pap-secrects
Just the defaults
----------------------pap-secrets---------------------
# Every regular user can use PPP and has to use passwords from /etc/passwd
* (none) "" *

# other accounts that should not be able to use pppd!

> and why aren't you specificying +pap in /etc/ppp/options?
I have tried ..
Tried these combinations:
+pap
-chap
+chap
-pap
+pap (only)
+chap (only)
My reasoning in it not being there at the moment The last 10 dials is
(it hasn't made any difference otherwise and I read it as
'+ == _requires_ that type of authentication') so if I don't
specify, then it will try any auth that the client is attempting ??
(doesn't work anyway ;)
Thanks for the angle, still plugging away.. ready to throw box or me from
large
height.
