this is what I ended up doing.  I then had various ssl type
errors, did a google and found this page:
http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/debian-sf-devel/2002-January/000050.html
which sounded like my problems so I followed it and now it
works, apache + libapache-mod-ssl.
