I have used Lycoris for about two months now, in fact I did a SLUGlet presentation on where it was kind enough to crash in front of everyone. If you are looking for a rock solid distribution this is not it, however, if you want a distribution that out of the box is ready to go it is good choice. You only get one desktop, KDE, and the folks at Lycoris have enhanced it to resemble XP. The thought being this will ease the transition of MS users into Linux. Good points: * Well it has a nice desktop icon called My Linux System (a rip off of My Computer) which is good for browsing the various discs. * The Control Centre (a Control Panel rip off) has virtually all the configuration options for both the desktop and system. * If you stuff up the X display you can boot into a GUI recovery mode to fix it. * Painless installation. * Nice auto-popup installer for RPMs * Great community who are really willing to help. * CDs auto mount and unmount Bad points: * Not as stable as other distributions * The enhanced KDE has every pretty feature turned on so slow systems are sluggish * Poor fonts, which can be fixed by installing the MS True Type fonts. But on my home machine this cuased a few proiblems. * Had to set my Geforce 256 card to Geforce 256 DDR or the fonts were either tiny or huge. * Comes only with Mozilla and KOffice. Whereas most distributions also include Opera and Open Office now. (Konquror and Kmail are available on the disk but must be installed alter. * Xine would not work on either of the machines I installed Lycoris on, even though out of the box Lycoris claim it all works. I would be waiting to see the new Red Hat (8?) which I hope will be more stable with a desktop just as easy to use. Hope this helps, if you want anymore information, don't hesitate to contact me.
