thanks.. it turned out to be a permissions problem on /tmp as suggested by Jessica .. but very confusing in the meantime. The diagnostic messages are anything but helpful as they specifically said there was another process when if fact there was not. What would I do without the slug resource :)
All I have to do now is figure out how the /tmp permissions changed.... David.
