This sounds frighteningly familiar.

I doubt it's related (but you never know...)
I recall in the past that the best place to track down gdm issues was in
/var/log/gdm/ for server based errors, IIRC. Also ~/.gnome-errors will
help you track down if the problem is on the user side.
Once, I recall the fix was having to buggerise around with it's
Xauthority's permisions for some odd reason. If this is your problem
it'll turn up in the above log files.
Once you sort out the gdm problem, try GDM2 from gnome2 - very perty.
Hope this is of some use, it's hard to think straight and recall things
clearly when you're bouncing around in the back of an X86 doing 80k's
down Pittwater Rd :)
