So anyway, Whilst randomly trying things I changed those proxy rules to be: $IPCHAINS -A input -p TCP -s 192.168.9.1 -d 0/0 80 -j REDIRECT 8080 and removed the erroneous squid directives which I hadn't noticed and it worked (well it works for mozilla).
