You don't mention which distro, so I'll assume RedHat.
It sounds like you have DHCP configured, which will by default overwrite
resolv.conf uppon fetching an address from your isp.
The way around this (going from memory here) is to modify the resolv.conf
file as you see fit then copy it to /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default.
The network scripts will then replace /etc/resolv.conf with the version in
/etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default, but YMMV. :-)
