Maybe you've got the virtual screen feature.
If so, you can drag your mouse past the bottom right
of the monitor screen and the whole lot should scroll
for you.
To disable this, check out your Xconfig -- compare
with the known 'good' one:
cd /etc/X11
ssh goodmachine cat /etc/X11/Xconfig | diff - Xconfig
